Philip J. DeRea

Philip Joseph DeRea, 92, died peacefully with family and God by his side on November 16, 2024. Philip was the son of the late Joseph and Constance (Albanese) DeRea of Roseto. His early years were spent attending grade school with his life long friends, being an altar boy and driver for the priests at the Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, Roseto, PA, and playing in the Roseto Band. Philip attended Bangor High School where he was the captain of the football team and in 1950 earned a scholarship to study and play football, later becoming captain, at Moravian University. Along with his football talents, he proudly played the clarinet in the marching band. Upon graduating with a B.S. degree, he had a successful career in engineering sales, coached little league football and also served on the Warren County Technical School Board of Education. He later retired from Robert J. Fitzmyer, Co., Inc. Philip lived in the Pocono Mountains for many years and had a passion for wildlife. He loved to play the saxophone and performed at family and local events. Philip also enjoyed cross country trips on his Harley Davidson motorcycle. The last few years he was a resident of Palmer Township, PA. Philip was predeceased by his first wife, Mary Ann Galanti DeRea, and his sisters, Kathryn Schiavone Brohawn and Lucy Muschio. Philip is survived by his sister, Veronica Tetz, Vineland, NJ, and his children: Joseph DeRea, Emmaus, PA, Lisa Frederiksen (Dennis), Monaco, Constance Hoglund (David), Bethlehem, PA, Carol Howard (Steven), Cape May, NJ, and Philip DeRea (David), Stillwater, NJ. He is also survived by his partner of many years, Kathleen Gilbert and her children, Jennifer (William) Penny and Jeffrey (Tasitha) Gilbert. Philip is also survived by 10 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren whom he loved dearly. Family and Friends may call on Sunday, November 24, 2024, from 2 to 5 PM ONLY at the Fiore Funeral Home, 230 Market Street Bangor, PA.. There will be a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 AM on Monday, November 25, 2024, in Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, Third & Garibaldi Avenues Roseto. Interment will be private and at the convenience of the family.
